Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has paid tribute at the grave of the late Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, former spokesperson of the Inqilab Manch. On Sunday morning, after offering the Fajr prayer at the Central Jame Mosque of Dhaka University, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman visited the grave along with party leaders and activists.

Speaking after the grave visit, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, “Hadi’s killers are, in effect, enemies of Bangladesh itself. This is because Hadi spoke in favour of Bangladesh—he stood for the country’s independence and sovereignty. Hadi spoke for our own culture, and his voice was raised against cultural degradation.”

He further said, “Hadi never extended a hand of injustice toward anyone, nor did he oppress anyone. He always spoke of justice. He even said that he did not want to be unjust even toward his enemies. Hadi had earned a place in many hearts. Perhaps this love became unbearable for some. That is why they conspired and removed him from this world.”

Regarding the election, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, “We are firmly hopeful that the election will be held in February. Toward this goal, we will extend all kinds of cooperation from our side. The main point is that the election must be fair, acceptable to the people, and reflect public opinion. No other considerations should interfere with this.”

Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim, Islami Chhatra Shibir Central President Zahidul Islam, Jamaat Central Executive Council member Mobarak Hossain, Central Executive Council member and Dhaka South City Naib-e-Ameer Dr Helal Uddin, Central Executive Council member and Dhaka South City Secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, Islami Chhatra Shibir Central Office Secretary Sibgatullah, DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem, GS S M Farhad, along with other central and metropolitan leaders of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir, were present at the event.

Zubaida Rahman flies back to London Dr Zubaida Rahman, the wife of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, has set off for London ahead of her husband’s planned return to Bangladesh after more than a decade in the UK. She left Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) around 8:30 am on Saturday, according to BNP media cell member Atikur Rahman Rumon. He said that Dr Zubaida is expected to travel back to Bangladesh later this week with Tarique Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman. The flight is scheduled to reach London’s Heathrow Airport after a stopover in Sylhet. Zubaida Rahman, a physician by training, had arrived in Dhaka on December 5 to be by her ailing mother-in-law, Khaleda Zia’s side, as the former Prime Minister underwent treatment in the critical care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital. She also helped oversee Khaleda’s treatment as a member of her medical board. Her return to London came a day after doctors overseeing Khaleda’s treatment said the 79-year-old BNP chief’s condition had stabilized. Khaleda Zia is being treated by a medical board made up of local and international specialists, led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder. One of the board members, Khaleda’s personal physician, Prof Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, told reporters on Friday that her condition had remained “largely stable” over the past month. The medical board was hopeful that she would continue to recover gradually, he said. Dr Zubaida first travelled to the UK in September 2008 with her daughter Zaima to seek advanced medical treatment for Tarique Rahman, who was unwell at the time. After the political transition in the country triggered by last year’s July Uprising, Zubaida returned to Bangladesh for the first time in May this year alongside her mother-in-law, who had travelled to the UK for treatment. She remained in Dhaka for about a month on that occasion. Tarique Rahman, who has been living in exile in the UK for more than 15 years, is the eldest son of the late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. He is expected to return to Bangladesh on December 25 as the country gears up for a general election in February.
