Goals from Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier secured a tense 2-0 victory for Borussia Dortmund against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, moving them up to second place in the Bundesliga table.
Brandt’s early goal gave Dortmund the lead, but the hosts, who have lost points from winning positions several times this season, again faced challenges in maintaining their advantage. In the final 10 minutes, Gladbach’s teenage midfielder Wael Mohya forced a reflex save from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. However, Beier confirmed the win with a goal deep into stoppage time.

“It felt good to score a late goal of our own this time and not concede an equaliser,” Brandt said to Sky Germany.

“A lot of games have ended in draws, so it was extremely important for us to win.”

The victory took Dortmund six points behind leaders Bayern Munich and three clear of third-placed RB Leipzig, who can return to second with a win at home against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac praised his side, saying: “We had a short summer break because of the Club World Cup, but we came out of it well.

“Of course we’d like to have a few more points, but I think the team is fighting hard.”

Dortmund came into the match having won 18 of their past 19 home meetings with Gladbach.

Former Dortmund midfielder and United States international Gio Reyna returned to the Westfalenstadion for the first time since joining Gladbach in the summer.

Handed just his second league start of the season, defender Niklas Suele created Dortmund’s opener, drifting in a cross for Brandt to volley home 10 minutes in.

The goal was the in-form Brandt’s fourth in his past three games.

Often criticised for his fitness and workrate, Suele was then on the spot to snuff out a Florian Neuhaus shot with an excellent challenge late in the opening half.

Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, with just one goal in his past 10 league games, looked to have broken through when he had the ball in the net just after the break but was offside.

Having made his senior debut last week, Gladbach’s 16-year-old midfielder Mohya almost levelled right after coming on, but his shot was diverted over the crossbar by Kobel.

In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Beier — who had missed a golden chance minutes earlier — was set up by fellow substitute Fabio Silva, tapping in from close range to wrap up the match for the hosts.

Zubaida Rahman flies back to London Dr Zubaida Rahman, the wife of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, has set off for London ahead of her husband’s planned return to Bangladesh after more than a decade in the UK. She left Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) around 8:30 am on Saturday, according to BNP media cell member Atikur Rahman Rumon. He said that Dr Zubaida is expected to travel back to Bangladesh later this week with Tarique Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman. The flight is scheduled to reach London’s Heathrow Airport after a stopover in Sylhet. Zubaida Rahman, a physician by training, had arrived in Dhaka on December 5 to be by her ailing mother-in-law, Khaleda Zia’s side, as the former Prime Minister underwent treatment in the critical care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital. She also helped oversee Khaleda’s treatment as a member of her medical board. Her return to London came a day after doctors overseeing Khaleda’s treatment said the 79-year-old BNP chief’s condition had stabilized. Khaleda Zia is being treated by a medical board made up of local and international specialists, led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder. One of the board members, Khaleda’s personal physician, Prof Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, told reporters on Friday that her condition had remained “largely stable” over the past month. The medical board was hopeful that she would continue to recover gradually, he said. Dr Zubaida first travelled to the UK in September 2008 with her daughter Zaima to seek advanced medical treatment for Tarique Rahman, who was unwell at the time. After the political transition in the country triggered by last year’s July Uprising, Zubaida returned to Bangladesh for the first time in May this year alongside her mother-in-law, who had travelled to the UK for treatment. She remained in Dhaka for about a month on that occasion. Tarique Rahman, who has been living in exile in the UK for more than 15 years, is the eldest son of the late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. He is expected to return to Bangladesh on December 25 as the country gears up for a general election in February.
