Sharif Osman Hadi, a frontline leader of the July Mass Uprising and spokesperson of the Inqilab Moncho, will live in the hearts of the people as long as Bangladesh exists, said Chief Adviser (CA) of the Interim Government Dr Muhammad Yunus.
He made the remarks on Saturday (December 20) while speaking before Sharif Osman Hadi’s Namaz-e-Janaza.

Dr Yunus said, “Osman Hadi lives within the people of Bangladesh and within us. As long as Bangladesh exists, he will remain in everyone’s heart.”

“Dear Osman Hadi, we have not come here to bid you farewell. You live within our hearts. No one can ever remove that,” he also said.

“Osman Hadi’s mantra was ‘Bolo Bir Chiro Unnoto Momo Shir’ (Say, O brave one—ever raised is my head). He left us with the mantra of never bowing our heads. This mantra will remain within us,” said the Chief Adviser.

Later, at 2:30 pm, Hadi’s Namaz-e-Janaza began at Manik Mia Avenue. The prayers were attended by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, members of the advisory council, top leaders of various political parties, and people from all walks of life.

Earlier, at around 9:40 am, Hadi’s body was taken from the morgue of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital under tight security provided by the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and other law enforcement agencies. His family members, fellow activists, and colleagues were present at the time.

After the autopsy, at around 11:40 am, Hadi’s body was taken back to the NICVD, where he was given the final ritual bath. Following this, his body was brought to the South Plaza of the National Parliament for the Namaz-e-Janaza.

Meanwhile, a one-day state mourning is being observed today following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. On this occasion, the national flag is being flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, government and private buildings, as well as Bangladesh missions abroad.

Sharif Osman Hadi was a frontline leader of the 2024 students-masses Uprising. He was the spokesperson of an organisation called Inqilab Moncho and an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming national election.

On December 12, during election campaigning, miscreants shot Osman Hadi while he was sitting in a rickshaw from a moving motorcycle at the Box Culvert Road in the capital’s Purana Paltan area. He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition.

Later, at the family’s request, he was transferred to Evercare Hospital in the capital. On December 15 in the afternoon, he was taken to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced treatment. He died there on December 18 while undergoing treatment. His body was brought back to Dhaka on Friday. After the Namaz-e-Janaza, Sharif Osman Hadi will be laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Zubaida Rahman flies back to London Dr Zubaida Rahman, the wife of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, has set off for London ahead of her husband’s planned return to Bangladesh after more than a decade in the UK. She left Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) around 8:30 am on Saturday, according to BNP media cell member Atikur Rahman Rumon. He said that Dr Zubaida is expected to travel back to Bangladesh later this week with Tarique Rahman and their daughter Zaima Rahman. The flight is scheduled to reach London’s Heathrow Airport after a stopover in Sylhet. Zubaida Rahman, a physician by training, had arrived in Dhaka on December 5 to be by her ailing mother-in-law, Khaleda Zia’s side, as the former Prime Minister underwent treatment in the critical care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital. She also helped oversee Khaleda’s treatment as a member of her medical board. Her return to London came a day after doctors overseeing Khaleda’s treatment said the 79-year-old BNP chief’s condition had stabilized. Khaleda Zia is being treated by a medical board made up of local and international specialists, led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder. One of the board members, Khaleda’s personal physician, Prof Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, told reporters on Friday that her condition had remained “largely stable” over the past month. The medical board was hopeful that she would continue to recover gradually, he said. Dr Zubaida first travelled to the UK in September 2008 with her daughter Zaima to seek advanced medical treatment for Tarique Rahman, who was unwell at the time. After the political transition in the country triggered by last year’s July Uprising, Zubaida returned to Bangladesh for the first time in May this year alongside her mother-in-law, who had travelled to the UK for treatment. She remained in Dhaka for about a month on that occasion. Tarique Rahman, who has been living in exile in the UK for more than 15 years, is the eldest son of the late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. He is expected to return to Bangladesh on December 25 as the country gears up for a general election in February.
